Dual American / Canadian JD Program

The Dual JD program allows students to earn both a Canadian JD (Windsor Law) and an American JD (Detroit Mercy Law), preparing graduates for cross-border legal practice.

Before orientation, you’ll receive a comprehensive Dual JD Handbook from the Program Director. This handbook covers:

  • Key dates and policies

  • Grade conversion charts

  • Border crossing and visa information

  • Administrative processes at both schools

Border & Travel Essentials

  • An F-1 Student Visa is required for classes at Detroit Mercy (administration will guide you)

  • NEXUS cards are strongly recommended (but not mandatory)

  • Although often confused, NEXUS and NEXPRESS are different programs, and both are useful for Dual JD students.

    • NEXUS is a trusted traveller program that allows for faster border crossings between Canada and the United States. It is strongly recommended for Dual students due to frequent travel but is not mandatory.

    • NEXPRESS is a discounted toll payment system used for the Windsor–Detroit tunnel. It can be loaded onto your NEXUS card, but the two programs serve different purposes.

  • Keep in mind that if you are carpooling and plan to use the NEXUS lane, everyone in the vehicle must have a valid NEXUS card. Due to long processing times, students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

  • Windsor–Detroit crossings include the tunnel and bridge; the tunnel is recommended

Academics

  • Grades earned at one school are converted for use at the other. Different grade conversion charts apply to required courses and elective courses, so it’s important to review the correct chart when interpreting grades across institutions.

  • Upper-year course registration happens later, so if you hear about courses that sound interesting during 1L, make note of them for future years.

Helpful Tips

  • Currency Exchange: The Windsor Currency Exchange located at the VIA Rail station offers some of the best exchange rates in the city and is especially convenient for tuition payments or regular use.

  • Earlier Start: Dual JD students begin earlier than Single JD students due to an initial orientation week at Detroit Mercy, followed by Windsor Law orientation. Plan accordingly when arranging housing, travel, and work commitments.

If you ever feel unsure, reach out early, this program has many moving parts, but there is strong institutional support!
