Externship Opportunities
Windsor Law’s Externship Program gives students the chance to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in real-world legal environments. This is a structured experiential learning opportunity designed to help you develop practical legal skills, professional judgment, and insight into legal careers.
What the Externship Program Involves
The Externship Program consists of two complementary components:
A seminar course, titled Learning in Place, that prepares you for placement, supports you throughout the term, and includes reflections and presentations; and
A work placement with an external organization where you gain hands-on experience.
Students must enrol in both the seminar and placement portions at the same time.
Placement Sites & Areas of Law
Externship placements vary each term and may include work with community legal clinics, legal aid offices, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and other legal-service environments. Types of legal work available through externships can include areas such as:
Immigration law
Environmental law
Housing and tenant rights
Elder law
Human rights law
Indigenous legal services...and more.
Who Can Participate
Externships are available to upper-year law students who apply through the competitive Externship Program process. Because placements occur in the field and contribute to your professional development, students are expected to meet placement requirements and professional conduct standards.
Why Externships Matter
Participating in an externship helps you:
Build practical legal skills in real professional settings
Develop professional connections with practitioners
Explore practice areas before articling or employment
Integrate academic learning with workplace experience
Externships are a valuable way to deepen your legal education while making meaningful contributions to organizations and communities.
Information on current placement sites, application timelines, and eligibility requirements is shared through the Faculty’s experiential learning office and information sessions each term. If you have any questions, please connect via externship@uwindsor.ca
